Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the epidemiologic properties of indirect rupture of Achilles tendon in Korea, and to evaluate the association with obesity as a potential risk factor. From January 1999 to December 2007, 104 patients with a diagnosis of indirect rupture of Achilles tendon were confirmed by a review of medical records. As control group, there were 4955 persons who were researched by the third Korea national health and nutrition examination survey. The mean age of an Achilles tendon rupture was of 41.0 years, and 30-49 year-period was 72.1%. The left-to-right ratio was 1.42:1. The recreational sports-related ruptures were seen in 77 patients(74.0%), especially soccer and kickball. As increasing the degree of obesity, the frequency of Achilles tendon ruptures tended to increase (p<0.01).
